We recently discovered a new concept in donuts right here in LA (Highland Park to be exact) and were so excited to hear that they had gluten-free and vegan options! Donut Friend, which is opening on Sept 24, is a new kind of donut shop that doesn’t make their donuts the night before – they make them to order. With an interesting assortment of flavors like Apple Pie, The Jelly Sound (strawberry jam, ricotta, sugar glaze, olive oil), and toppings like basil, sriracha, Gruyère, and of course all your normal chocolatey, fruit and sugar glazes, Donut Friend definitely seems like it’s aiming to give our taste buds a whirl.
And for us folk with food intolerances, the best part may be the DIY option, where you can select your donut base and add in whatever toppings you desire.
Owner Mark Trombino has found what he views are the perfect gluten-free and vegan recipes, the gluten-free donut replacing wheat flour with Bob’s Red Mill gluten-free flour (in my view probably the best mix out there), and the vegan donut replacing eggs and butter with Bob’s egg replacer and Earths Balance non-dairy butter (another one of my favorites). Many of Donut Friend’s toppings are also naturally vegan, including all their glazes (although note they do not use vegan sugar), and their vegan chocolate mousse and vegan pastry cream which uses vegan rice milk and vegan cream cheese.
Mark decided to include gluten-free and vegan options on the menu so that his friends who have dietary restrictions could enjoy his donuts, and because he had never tasted a tasty gluten-free or vegan donut….until his made his own. He is even working on a baked gluten-free AND vegan donut. Hooray! I am so excited to try this place! Thanks for another opportunity to indulge Mark!
