Why We Love It: There is so much to love about this chocolate bar, from the fact that it is Certified Gluten-Free (celiacs rejoice!), to its decent nutritionals, to the ethical way it was produced. Most importantly though is its intense chocolatey flavor. This is a complex chocolate, with hints of raisin when raisins are not an ingredient, and what they call in wine a long finish. Add to that the lighthearted crispiness of the puffed quinoa that is a nutritious update of a Nestle Crunch Bar, and you’ve got one dreamy sweet morsel. One serving listed as 5 pieces, but the flavor of this chocolate is so satisfying that I only need one piece at a time, which means for me each serving only contains 3g of fat and about 7g of carbs. Not bad for dessert!
Meet the Makers: Based in San Francisco, CA, Alter Eco’s mission is “global transformation through ethical relationships with small-scale farmers, and an integral sustainability orientation at every point on the supply chain.” Not your average chocolate company. Aside from their chocolates, they sell quinoa, rice and sugar, all sustainably farmed and fair trade certified. The cocoa in their bars comes from farming cooperatives either in Ecuador or Peru, which is then brought to Switzerland where they are roasted and formed by chocolatiers. www.alterecofoods.com
