Why We Love It: I’ve never been a beer drinker, and that’s not just because I can’t do gluten. I just don’t think it tastes good. But I like the idea of a cold refreshing beverage that you can unwind with at the end of a week that’s not quite as serious as a cocktail or glass of wine. That’s why this Crisp Apple cider was so refreshing, both to my taste buds, and to my day. It wasn’t cloyingly sweet as some ciders and other beverages can be, and yet it had a tiny bit of weight and depth to it such that it didn’t just feel like I was drink apple juice. That’s what makes it such a great accompaniment for Thai food or curry – it balances out the heaviness and spiciness of the curry! We also tried Boston Beer Company’s (an affiliate of Angry Orchard) newest line, Truly Spiked & Sparkling, which are clear sugar-based alcoholic spritzers with a hint of fruit flavoring (grapefruit and lime), and these are even lighter than their ciders, almost like drinking sparkling water. So the Crisp Apple cider was a nice contrast, both in color and weight. It just depends on what you’re in the mood for!
Meet the Makers: Based in Walden, NY, Angry Orchard was launched in 2011 and carries a range of naturally gluten-free ciders. The Crisp Apple cider is their flagship flavor, and they also have other sparkling varieties that range in weight, dryness and “gourmet-ness”. Their apples are grown on their family-owned 60 acre orchard in the heart of the Hudson Valley, which is known as the Apple Belt of New York, the second largest apple producing state in the country. www.angryorchard.com
