Why We Love It: A marshmallow that comes in awesome yummy flavors and is meant to be eaten as snack? Yes please! Let’s face it, normal marshmallows can be boring and just fluffy forms of sugar and nasty artificial ingredients like corn syrup, modified corn starch and dextrose. But these have none of those un-natural ingredients, and the flavors are something to write home about. We tasted all of them and Mint Chocolate Chip was our favorite – it’s perfect to fold into a luscious cup of hot cocoa around the holidays. Although the chocolate to mint ratio was a bit low when just eating these straight out of the bag, once you dunk these babies in hot chocolate, your chocolate problem is solved and the mint just melts into the chocolate for a perfect balance. We also loved the Cinnamon Churro flavor and the Meyer Lemon Chia Seed (yes there were actual chia seeds in the marshmallow) and ate multiple of those straight out of the bag. These marshmallows aren’t labeled gluten-free, but they are made with gluten-free ingredients, which means they’re probably safe for people with gluten intolerances but NOT for people with allergies or celiac. Although there’s not getting away from the fact that marshmallows are high in sugar, we were pleased by the fact that the sugar in these marshmallows is organic and there aren’t any ingredients you can’t pronounce on the label.

Meet the Makers: Based in the Sonoma, CA, SmashMallow was founded in August 2016 by Jon Sebastini, the founder of Krave Jerky. As an avid marathon-runner, Jon often found himself indulging in a marshmallow or two from his cupboard when he needed a sweet fix, as a ‘better-for-you’ and fat-free option. Then on a trip to Paris, he was struck by the fact that bakeries in Europe have decadent marshmallows on display, alongside macarons and other gourmet treats. He knew then that he could reintroduce the classic American Marshmallow in a fun, delicious and healthier way, taking it far beyond traditional s’mores. www.smashmallow.com

Fun Fact: Did you know there’s such thing as organic root beer? Well SmashMallow uses their own organic root beer concentrate in their Root Beer Float flavor.
