Yam Ice Cream (GF, DF)

DSC02029

It’s hot outside, and it’s back to school time! How about trying a new ice cream recipe that will cool everyone off, and provide a healthier treat at the end of a long day? Have you ever had or made dairy-free ice cream and felt that there was something missing? A creaminess, a thickness, a heartiness, that comes standard with every bite of dairy-full Haagen-Daz ice cream? Well we discovered the perfect ingredient to add this creaminess to non-dairy ice cream: yams! Although yams are one of the more starchy root vegetables out there, they contain complex carbohydrates and a healthy dose of fiber, vitamin B, vitamin C and minerals. Combine them with pumpkin-pie-esque spices and you’ve got yourself a wonderful pre-fall dessert that will remind your taste buds of the season ahead. If you can’t find yams, sweet potatoes work too!

Delicata Squash Donuts (GF, DF)

This recipe by Will Frolic for Food looks amazing AND healthy, and is perfect for Hanukkah! We love anything involving squash, not only for its nutritional properties and fiber content, but for that slightly nutty flavor that immediately brings to mind images of cozying up around a fire when it’s cold outside. Top these donuts with some melted chocolate and powdered sugar for a decadent dessert, or have them with a hot cup of coffee for breakfast!

Triple Berry Skillet Cobbler (GF, SF)

Triple-Berry-Cobbler

It’s summer! And that means an abundance of colorful and nutritious fruit! Not only do we love eating the raw fruit – they’re definitely sweet enough on their own – but why not get a little frisky in the kitchen and make a cobbler or crisp out of them (can anyone tell us the difference between the two? Comment below with your thoughts). We love berries for so many reasons – they taste good and are easy to bake with, and they also pack a serious nutritional punch. Not only are they high in vitamins, fiber and antioxidants, but they’re also lower in carbs and calories than most other fruits. What a win-win!

Gluten-Free High Protein Cheesecake (GF, SF)

open-uri20150722-16-d1jddy.jpeg

Here at The Tasteful Pantry, we are huge fans of having our cake and eating it too…literally! For us that means eating delicious food that is also nutritious and doesn’t break the calorie bank! So that’s why we’re super excited to share the idea of a high protein cheesecake with you. Not only do the ingredients in this cheesecake give you a protein boost, but they also replace many of the high fat high calorie ingredients found in typical cheesecakes with cleaner, healthier versions that still give you a rich creamy consistency. We love this recipe from the Dashing Dish, which you can top with a fruit or topping of your choice.

Grain-Free Queen Mother’s Cake (GF)

cake-486874_960_720

We love chocolate. And more chocolate. And more chocolate. Especially during the holidays. That’s why we couldn’t resist sharing this gluten-free, grain-free recipe for “Queen Mother’s Cake”. Now you may ask, why is it called Queen Mother’s Cake? There seems to be some debate about whether an actual British monarch was involved in the history of the cake (it is rumored to have been the favorite cake of Queen Elizabeth), but modern adaptations focus more on its modern origins as the most popular recipe of Maida Heatter, aka the Queen of Desserts…..ahhh the lightbulbs flash on!

We love it because it’s gluten-free (obviously) and relatively low carb – it definitely contains less sugar than the typical chocolate cake recipe, and the almond base adds that extra bit of protein and healthy fat. Super indulgent with health benefits? Sounds almost too good to be true!

You’ll just want to take a few bites if you’re watching your waistline, but what a heavenly few bites those will be. Enjoy!
